In 2005, the Wahkiakum Community Foundation formed the Columbia Estuary Environmental Education Program (CEEEP), in an effort to support high school students from Naselle, Wahkiakum, and Grays River.

As part of the environmental science curriculum at their high schools, students and teachers continue to visit the project site throughout the year to monitor changes and make assessments.

CEEEP’s partners include local timber companies, and several national & state agencies:

Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST)

Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership (LCREP)

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Department of Ecology

Department of Fish & Wildlife

Department of Natural Resources

Six weeks each summer, funding is provided for seven students and one teacher who work on habit restoration projects in areas near the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge. The six-week program is designed to teach a balanced approach to resource management. Areas of focus include clean water maintenance, fish habitat sustainability, and timber management. Dr. Rob Stockhouse serves as CEEEP’s Education Director. Guest instructors include professional scientists and hydrologic engineers.
